Grounds for Sculpture

Hello everyone... I completely forgot to mention that on Wednesday, my art class went on a field trip to Grounds for Sculpture! All the sculptures were amazing... Absolutely magnificient and (dare I say it?) MAJESTIC.

For those of you that don't know what the Grounds for Sculpture, it is, ehem, grounds for sculpture. Like, literally. It is, I believe, 35 acres of nature and art combined. Founded by J. Seward Johnson (who is also a relative of Johnson & Johnson, yes those people.), the sculptures are placed in a natural environment and meld perfectly with the nature. Beautiful trees and flowers and stuff mixed with beautiful pieces of art? Absolutely wonderful.

Seriously, go there some time. Even if you're not a big appreciator of art, you'll find this place breath-taking.

Gosh I sound like a really bad cheesy book/quote/calandar and whatnot with my amazing synnanyms for "amazing". So hey, I'll just say that the place was amazing, okee dokee?

Well anyway it was awesome (another synnanym for amazing, yes), especially since alot of my friends are in the art class and went on the field trip too. Also including a certain someone who I IGNORED for a while, but then eventually began annoying him. It was like a 45 bus ride there... And seriously, if not for my iPod, I woulda died. Everyone was so dang QUIET!

And just if you were, ya know, wondering, no I did not sit with HIM. He sat with his friend Laura, which got me a little jealous, but like, whatever, she's my friend too.... And she texted me using his phone, which pissed him off because then we started talking about him. (We changed his name to Roger-Fabio. =])

But enough about him! He's a party pooper!! Especially since he looked kinda sad the whole trip as soon as he realized I was there, hehehe. But ANYWAY!

Ground for Scuplture. Mhmm, loved it! We spent the whole school day there (so that was about 6 or 7 hours). We packed our own lunches, etc. It was FREEZING and we were outside the whole time, except for lunch when we went inside and raided the cafe and giftshop. I feel so bad for the employees working there, imagine about 80 little 8th graders running around and eating and talking with their mouths full.... So scary. (Oh and no there aren't 80 kids in my art class, my school has two periods of art class, so 40. And then the other 40 were the art students from our rival school across town, so it was all BLEH TENSION RIVALRY RAWR!)

At the gift shop, I bought a pretty red tiger eye stone necklace. With my uhm (mom's) money. She didn't specify what KIND of emergancy to use it for... Right?

This is sort of like the one that I bought. I'm wearing it right now, in fact! =)

Anyway, here are pictures of some of the sculptures I loved the most.

This one is actually really tiny and was hidden among bushes on a trail through these trees next to a treehouse type building. I loved this one, because it was so perfect, and TINY!

This one we walked by, and since it is winter, the trees around it had no leaves and such. The water was also ice, and some snow that refused to melt still lay around. This one is really impressive, because it's huge, and when you walk past a dense area of trees, this one is like BAM all of a sudden there!

This one is a life-size recreation of a famous painting, but with a few tweaks. For example, if you look closely, one of the members of this party is actually a sculpture of J. Seward Johnson, who of course, was not in the original painting.

So, that concludes my enormous novel of a post! Since you have only seen 3 out of around 250 sculptures from the Grounds for Sculpture here, I really recommend that you look some up. Or even better- take a trip to the Grounds for Sculpture! Even if you live far away, the trip will be worth it. =)

I really do recommend that you go during spring or summer. Or fall. Anytime besides winter, because it's mostly outside and YOU WILL FREEZE TO DEATH! And also, there are some fountains and special sculptures that only go out in the spring/summer. I missed those. =( Hopefully, you will not! Adios for now!
